Film #14: WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
What We Do in the Shadows
4 out of 5 stars
This may be the old Goth in me talking, but WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS is absolutely brilliant. Spot-on funny, informed and insightful, writer / director team of Jemaine Clement (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS) and Taika Waititi (GREEN LANTERN) knock it out of the park. Imagine THE YOUNG ONES as vampires and you’re halfway there. From the prissy Viago and the hypersexual Vladislav to the dour Deacon and the Max Shreck-ish Petyr… no vampire archetype is left unsullied or unexamined. Further, in the film, there are so many little ‘throw away’ jokes that are gold that it’s easy to loose them if you’re not paying attention. This one’s so good, I really don’t want to spoil ANYTHING, but… suffice it to say that WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS is one of the most entertaining comedies in recent memory. Again, recommended especially if you’ve ever been in a Goth club.
