Film #19: TONY HINCHCLIFFE - ONE SHOT
Tony Hinchcliffe: One Shot
2.5 out of 5 stars
Shot in one continuous take, this Netflix-produced special features “roast joke writer extraordinaire” Tony “The Golden Pony” Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe is best known as the writer of Martha Stewart’s jokes for the Justin Beiber Roast as well as hosting the break-out podcast, KILL TONY in Deathsquad. There’s no doubting that Hinchcliffe has the goods as a comic. Sadly, the decision to shoot this all in one take is its undoing. For some unknown reason the cameraman insists on moving the camera ever so slightly which makes for a feeling in the viewer best left to Dramamine. There are some funny chunks of comedy here, but they are counter-weighted by Hinchcliffe trying to be personable and likeable. His stuff is dark and I mean REALLY dark. Rather than embracing that like say an Anthony Jezelnik, Hinchcliffe tries too hard to be cordial when the thing that would best serve him is to simple not care and trust the material. Worth seeing, but… knowing Tony Hinchcliffe from his podcasts, it could have – and should have – been a lot better.
