Film #44: TURBO KID
3 out of 5 stars
Much like the recent KUNG FURY, TURBO KID is a delightful throwback to the 80’s Cannon films many of us grew up with. Filmed in Quebec and product of a New Zealand and Canada coproduction, TURBO KID is, if nothing else, a hoot. The script is endearingly stupid as it parodies films like ROAD WARRIOR, SPACEHUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE and MEGAFORCE skillfully and completely. Fans of the old VHS days will eat this up. And what’s nice is that TURBO KID continually winks at its audience and everyone is in on the joke. I mean, no one is taking this film too seriously. Michael Ironside chews scenery and the film’s acting highpoint is the portrayal “Apple” by Laurence Leboeuf. Fun, goofy, and gory… TURBO KID is one of those things you don’t think too much about. You just sit back and enjoy it.
