Film #101: NINJA
2 out of 5 stars
Where to begin? Derivative plot, horrendous acting, WAY too much CG blood... it's all here. This kind of crap might've worked back in the ‘80s (had it starred someone like JCVD or Dolph Lundgren), but today... it comes off silly & clichéd. Adkins is a terrible actor (with a decidedly gym-based body & a wooden acting style) & the villains (the nefarious Ring is obviously cribbed from COBRA & the evil ninja dude wears Christian Bales's rejected Batman outfits) are - to quote Jim Kelly - like something straight out of a comic book. There are isolated stunt gags that are inventive (the dude thrown out the train window only to be smacked by another train before he hits the ground, for example), but there is ABSOLUTELY nothing here even the casual action film fan hasn't seen before.
