Film #117: COLD FISH
4 out of 5 stars
The great Shion Sono (STRANGE CIRCUS) directs this strange and arresting tale of a mild-mannered fish store owner who finds himself drawn into a dark world of conspiracy and murder. Filled with oddly compelling characters and some jaw-dropping plot devices, Sono crafts a film that will have you saying “WTF” aloud on several occasions. Be warned though… the film is long (it runs ~146 minutes) and is slow to get started, but… once the third act kicks in, it REALLY kicks in. Also, those who have an aversion to blood / gore and sexuality should probably steer clear. There’s a lot of it (especially in the aforementioned third act). This is more STRANGE CIRCUS than EXTE: HAIR EXTENSIONS, but it is a really fun and satisfying viewing. Look for the always stunning Asuka Kurosawa (A SNAKLE OF JUNE) as an over-sexed accomplice. Good stuff!!
