Film #137: THE HELLBENDERS
3 out of 5 stars
A little talked about, but fairly satisfying spaghetti western from the great Sergio Corbucci (THE GREAT SILENCE & DJANGO) starring a long in the tooth Joseph Cotten. The story sports lots of twists and turns and some decent performances. Unlike others of Cobucci’s film, THE HELLBENDERS lacks anything even resembling an iconic central figure. Instead, we get a group of Confederate outlaws who robs a convoy to fund their army and aren’t exactly the smartest thing on the range. One mishap after another befalls them as they try to make it to a safe haven with their loot, but without a hero to drive the piece, it all sort of just meanders along. Still… there are some fun sequences, but this is by no means a classic of the genre and definitely not the best film Corbucci directed. For that, reference the aforementioned THE GREAT SILENCE & DJANGO.
