Film #232: KNIVES OF THE AVENGER
Knives of the Avenger
2.5 out of 5 stars
Mario Bava directs a Viking revenge film from 1966. Set in his filmography somewhere between PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES and DR GOLDFOOT AND THE GIRL BOMBS, the story is pretty standard stuff. Cameron Mitchell stars as the angst-filled knife-thrower out to redeem himself. Narratively, it’s pretty by-the-book and there is little use of Bava’s awesome sense of color and staging. Instead, we get lots of talking, some badly choreographed fight scenes, and some REALLY bad hair dye jobs. Mostly recommended for Bava completists and “sword & sandal” fanatics, the film is mostly notable for Bava having directed it and little else. Fun, but inconsequential, really.
