Film #332: NOTORIOUS
3 out of 5 stars
Another nostalgic re-watch. This viewing is the result of my finding directors I like and being driven to see everything they’ve done. Hitchcock helms this classic 1946 spy thriller, Cary Grant is smooth as silk as Devlin and Ingrid Bergman smolders as the tragic Alicia. A lot of the narrative is dated now, but at the time, this was riveting stuff. As always, Hitchcock is a master of tension and tone even with the production sometimes overuse of rear projection and sets. As the film progresses and the narrative noose is drawn tighter, the viewer can feel a palpable sense of dread. Hitchcock completists will have undoubtedly already seen this. Others… will want to add this classic to their queue. Dated, but an absolute classic!
