Film #333: BUSHIDO: THE CRUEL CODE OF THE SAMURAI
Bushido: The Cruel Code of the Samurai
3 out of 5 stars
AnimEigo continues to bring forgotten Japanese cinema stateside. This one is a tale about the high cost of Loyalty & at what price (and for what reasons) a man can claim Honor. Sadly, the main actor (Kinnosuke Nakamura who portrays several roles throughout time) plays such a spineless jerk who - more often than not - hides behind the Code of Bushido to either further his position or to keep his head attached to his shoulders. If he were to act dishonorably once or twice I might have forgiven it, but... this guy is a shithead one generation after another. The acting is good and the direction is interesting, but... one leaves the film thinking what a schmuck this main guy was and how, for all his pretension, he is a coward who misses the true point of his own ideals. Shot in beautiful B&W, there are some undeniably cool scenes here, but... again, thematically, it leaves the viewer feeling a little cold.
