Film #344: THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE
The Triplets of Belleville
3.5 out of 5 stars
A nostalgic re-watch! I first saw the work of director Sylvain Chomet with his second film, THE ILLUSIONIST (which I liked a lot). So it was with great excitement that I picked up this, his first film. Happily, I can say that TRIPLETS is every bit as good as ILLUSIONIST and it possesses much of the same heart. The animation style is more stylized (less photo-real) than THE ILLUSIONIST but it is equally endearing. I did end up liking the latter film more, but I think that had more to do with the great Jacques Tati having a hand in the script (of whom I’m a huge fan). TRIPLETS is an enchanting ride and one that is recommended.
