Film #348: MUTANTS
2 out of 5 stars
The French weigh in on the viral zombie genre with this tale of life amidst the zombie outbreak, However, the film is low budget, so you never see more than 5 or 6 zombies at any one time. Instead, we get scenes of 2 actors either shrieking or crying alternated with them staring concernedly at a small radio. Some of the creatures look cool, but… for the most part, they are all shot in an annoying “shaky-cam” manner that it’s hard to tell what’s going on. And forget about learning any of the science of the outbreak. The filmmakers play so fast and loose with The Rules that it’s hard to keep up with what does what. Oh… and the film has one of the dumbest protagonists of all time. Zombie film completists will want to rent this… just cause. Non-zombie fans won’t be too disappointed, but there are plenty of other - better - zombie films out there to rent (THE HORDE is but one). That all said, in this budget category, the French still make a better brand of horror film than their low budget American counterparts.
