Film #340: AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER
Avatar: The Last Airbender

Ok, so first and foremost, this is a kid’s movie. The violence is sanitized. The motivations fairly one-dimensional. And all of this is confusing given that the plot is so utterly convoluted and complicated that adults walk away shaking their heads. In the final reels, the plot unwinds into some pseudo-feel good nonsense and loses whatever momentum is might have had. That said, the film LOOKS pretty amazing… and that’s no wonder given $150 million was thrown at the screen. In the end, THE LAST AIRBENDER is an interesting experiment of a major genre director trying his hand at a mainstream children’s movie. The result is confusing, meandering, and far too unfocused to be of any lasting value. Fans of the anime will surely hate this. See this one with the kids, but leave your logic and narrative sense at the door.
