Film #37: POWER PLAY
2 out of 5 stars
From 1978, this film is pretty much a schematic for how to stage a coup d’état. In a corrupt, fictional European country, a group of high ranking generals launch an assault on said country. As the plan comes together, personalities clash and dark motivations are revealed. The film stars David Hemming (DEEP RED), Peter O’Toole (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA), and Donald Pleasance (HALLOWEEN) and they all do an adequate job in their respective roles. The story, while interesting, just never seem to create any heat… much less tension. Again, the nuts and bolts of the creation of the coup are indeed interesting, The film just never seems to come together as a coherent narrative. “Men on a military mission” film fans may dig it, but there’s just not enough here to really warrant much of a recommendation. OK, but really could’ve been great.
