Film #72: UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US
Until the Light Takes Us
3 out of 5 stars
An enlightening documentary on the controversial Norwegian Black Metal scene with insightful interviews with some of the world’s heaviest hitters. If the film suffers from anything, it’s that it presupposes the audience’s knowledge of who’s who. For example, when Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell or Varg “Count Grishnackh” Vikernes are onscreen, if the viewer does not know who they are or what their significance is, what they’re talking about loses its sense of import. For those who do know who they are, these are pretty amazing interviews. What does come through in the narrative is the overwhelming sense of the time when this musical style was young. Non-fans may not appreciate what the fuss is all about or why everyone is interested in the first place. Fans… will love this.
