Film #92: KNUCKLE
3 out of 5 stars
Another rewatch - sue me. This documentary - which took over twelve years to make - focuses on the world of “Travelers” and their feuding with one another by way of bare-knuckle boxing. If you ever saw Guy Ritchie’s film SNATCH, you’ll immediately understand what we’re talking about here. It’s basically The Hatfields and the McCoys in Ireland. The documentary is nowhere near perfect. There are some sound issues (the narrator’s volume is often too far down in the mix) and the subjects have THICK accents (so thick that many times subtitles are employed), but the film does what good documentaries do - show the viewer a glimpse into another world. The fighting is by no means pretty. It is after all bare-knuckle. There is sometimes a lot of blood. There is also a LOT of pride and ignorance on display. These people’s arguments and disagreements are FAR into the past and mean - quite literally - nothing. But that seems to have no bearing on how these people live their lives. Interesting, provocative, and a solid night’s viewing.
