Music: Morrissey CALIFORNIA SON / Jack Jezzro COCKTAIL PARTY BOSSA NOVA
MORRISSEY CALIFORNIA SON
Full disclosure… I’ve never been much of a Morrissey fan… much less a Smiths fan. All I know if Morrissey is that he has opinions and he can be difficult. So, I had none of the ingrained love for the man or his music going in. That all said... this record, overall, is, as the kids say, ‘meh.’ The two standout tracks are covers: a pitch perfect recreation of Roy Orbison’s “It’s Over” and one of Laura Nyro / The Fifth Dimension’s “Wedding Bell Blues.” Other than that… I was left nonplussed. Interesting as a new listener, but… I can’t imagine multiple records of this whining.
Jack Jezzro COCKTAIL PARTY BOSSA NOVA
A record of straight up Lounge / Dinner Jazz covers of standards… cool, competently made, and, at times, quite subtle and intricate. Think ‘really good casino jazz band’ and you’re not too far off. Still… the instrumentation is sweet and the soling is competent, so… As good as, say, a Spyro Gyra, Rippingtons, or Yellowjackets record.
