Music: Vivian Sessoms LIFE II / Alan Holdsworth LIVE IN JAPAN 1984
Vivian Sessoms LIFE II
Super intricate piano-based dinner jazz that’s well executed and sophisticated. Some tracks have vocals, but… when the rap shows up, it feels like pandering. Nut so much of this record is great, it’s easy to overlook the stumbles. There’s some great stuff here… and it outweighs the dumb (covering The Fixx’s “One Thing Leads to Another” like a salsa, for example). All in all a delightful record and one that makes me want to dive deeper into Sessom’s music. Keep an eye out… I’ll get to it!
Alan Holdsworth LIVE IN JAPAN 1984
The King… NO ONE plays like Holdsworth; a technical player’s wonderland. Most listeners will be confounded by this as it’s REALLY challenging. I mean, this guy goes through modes like pocket change. Vocals are admittedly the weak link, but… it all somehow fits. Worth checking out if only to hear Holdsworth’s soloing.
