Music: Santana AFRICA SPEAKS / Cash Box Kings HAIL TO THE KINGS
Santana AFRICA SPEAKS
From the first notes of the guitar, you know this is a Santana record; the tone, the phrasing… Carlos is a god and his records have always shown his multi-cultural approach to music. And so, the idea of him addressing African music is a no-brainer. Sadly, while the record passes the bar of ‘good,’ it soon overstays its welcome and songs all start to sound the same. As usual, there are some tracks that can be culled for that mix-tape, but… overall, this one was meh for me.
Cash Box Kings HAIL TO THE KINGS
This is some ‘old school barroom blue’ that is played to perfection; VERY MUCH ‘goodtime rock-n0-roll.’ Record is perfect for those warm afternoons, beer, and/or picnics. The musicians all play well, although… no one’s really exemplary on their chosen instrument (i.e., no shredding to be found). It’s more of a ‘song-based’ record rather than a “look what I learned at Berklee!” thing. Good, not great… but rock solid given what it set out to do
