Music: Bear McCready THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN / George Fenton RED JOAN
Bear McCready THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN
A classic orchestral score – lots of cellos and strings – that’s beautifully handled. There is some GSM, but the overall record is still stunning: moody and melancholic. I listened to the record in the early morning and it was perfect. In the end, this is a beautifully recorded score that only stumbles when it tries to actually BE a film score (ie, rote passages that only serve to accompany the film’s visuals). But Bear McCready is just killing it these days. Great stuff!!!
George Fenton RED JOAN
On the other hand… there’s George Fenton’s score to RED JOAN. The movie, according to the trailer, is a spy mystery / thriller and maybe that’s where this all fails. Yes, there are a few dark and menacing themes, but… this is mostly GSM (and not particularly good GSM at that); overly generic and far too utilitarian for its own good. As usual, you may find a track or two of interest, but, yeah… meh.
