Music: Kirk Franklin LONG LIVE LOVE / Esperanza Spalding 12 LITTLE SPELLS
Kirk Franklin LONG LIVE LOVE
Full disclosure: I’ve always loved the music of Kirk Franklin. While I am not a person of faith, I still love his sense of style, his exemplary use of choir, and his true understanding of what’s funky. This is beautiful stuff, man… some of the best modern gospel; whether or not you’re into The Message (and I’m not), this is a beautiful record. Funky, well-performed, well-written… absolutely fabulous! I mean, this music HAS soul! And man… do I love a choir like this!! HIGHLY recommended!
Esperanza Spalding 12 LITTLE SPELLS
This is the first record I’ve heard of Esperanza Spalding’s since the brilliant “Radio Music Society.” That record struck a nice balance between the Experimental and Pop Accessible. This record… is more hit-r-miss and more nuanced. SPELLS is a complex, sophisticated acid jazz… with nary a pop hit in sight. Not a record for those who are looking to remain unchallenged. This is something you really have to pay attention to; not something you put on while doing something else. This little girl is growing up! Solid, but… come caveats apply.
